The Alphabestiary

Discovering Francophone legends through typography.

As part of the opening of the Cité internationale de la langue française at the Château de Villers-Cotterêts, the Centre des Monuments Nationaux, the Imprimerie Nationale and the CNAP launched an artist residency around the theme “Typography and the Francophonie.” For this occasion, we created The Alphabestiary, an alphabet exploring Francophone folklores through mythical creatures. Each figure is drawn based on its legendary description and shaped to embody the initial letter of its name. These 26 “monstrous” glyphs form the uppercase set of a custom typeface designed by Eugénie Bidaut: l’Hérissant·e.
