Gender Institute

Promoting and enhancing gender studies through a strong graphic identity.

Founded in 2012 on the initiative of the CNRS, the Institut du Genre is a Groupement d'Intérêt Scientifique (GIS) whose mission is to structure, support and raise the profile of gender and sexuality studies in France. We chose to structure the visual identity around Adelphe, an inclusive typeface created by Eugénie Bidaut in 2022 as part of her research at the ANRT. This typeface is unique in that it preserves the visual homogeneity of long texts in small type and offers several inclusive writing systems, thus contributing to their appropriation in the institutional sphere. Its name, which means both brother and sister, is widely used in queer activist communities. We used this typeface to create a sober, elegant logo, punctuated by two brackets that evoke scientific study, gathering, guidance and support. It also suggests the open space of the architectural plan and positions the institute as a place of innovation, where different research actors come together. The ergonomics of the site have been completely redesigned around a rather radical graphic line, providing a fluid browsing experience, easy access to information and comfortable reading.
